Modeling dynamic fragmentation of brittle materials usuallyimplies to choose between a discrete description of the number offragments and a continuum approach with damage variables. A damagemodel that can be used in the whole range of loadings (fromquasi-static to dynamic ones) is developed. The deterministic orprobabilistic nature of fragmentation is discussed. Qualitative andquantitative validations are given by using a real-time visualizationconfiguration for analyzing the degradation Kinetics during impactand a moire technique to measure the strains in a ceramic tile duringimpact. Finally, a closed-form Solution of the change of the numberof broken defects with the applied stress gives a way of optimizingthe microstructure of Ceramics for armor applications.
