The Employment Problems of People Disabled by Schizophrenia

Over 150 people admitted to psychiatric hospitals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia were followed up for a 12 month period. Only a small number of them were employed during the whole of this period. The extremely high rate of unemployment amongst the sample appeared to be primarily due to their failure to remain in jobs rather than their difficulty in finding them. They left jobs for the most part voluntarily, chiefly in response to excessive‘stress’.
