In the transition from a rural to an urban society the traditional family in Slovenia has been changing, and it can no longer meet all the needs of its members. Society has had to develop support services to assist families in carrying out their traditional activities, particularly caring for the elderly. In Slovenia the community nurse is the key supporter of family care. Community nurses carry out health promotion activities, deliver care to sick elderly persons, and provide support to their families.
