This is the eighth year of the Leeds Lighting Award, a unique city wide initiative that emerged from the 1993 Leeds Lighting Strategy. The aim of the Awards is to give recognition to good and innovative lighting schemes and to increase awareness of the contribution that lighting can make to the night-time environment. This years event was sponsored by WRTL Exterior Lighting Ltd - and the guest assessor was Bob Stevenson, the ILE's current President and chief lighting engineer for Rotherham. This time round, nominations have been sought from professionals (architects, builders etc) in four categories: Building Exteriors; Building Interiors; Exterior Spaces; and Retail Display. In addition this year saw the introduction of the People's Award, in which the public was asked to vote for what they thought was the best lighting scheme from a pre-selected list of nominated schemes. Voting took place via the Internet.
