Thirty-thousand florets from 5Chionochloaspecies (Gramineae: Arundinoideae) were examined for insect damage in a survey of 22 alpine tussock grassland sites in the South Island. The five tall lussock species areC. flaveseens, C. maera, C. pallens, C. rigida, and C. rubra,and the investigation of floret damage was in two parts: (a) an annual assessment of seed damage over 5 years (1969#x2013;73) at one site; (b) a survey and assessment of seed damage at 21 further sites in 1 year only (1970).
