Saudi Arabia supplied the majority of China’s high-sulphur petroleum coke imports in April, as calciners sought out new sources in a tight green coke market and demand for US highsulphur coke fell. Coke from the 400,000 b/d Yasref refinery in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, a joint venture between Saudi Arabian and Chinese state-owned oil companies Saudi Aramco and Sinopec, can be calcined for anode production despite its high sulphur content of around 8.5pc. The coke has sponge texture and low metals content, unlike many other high-sulphur cokes, including the 400,000 b/d Saudi Aramco-Total joint-venture Satorp refinery across the country in Jubail.
