Two infection sites ofHypoxylon mammatumin trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides)

Observations and dissection of young naturally occurring cankers caused byHypoxylon mammatumsuggest that infection of second- and third-season-old stems and branches commonly takes place at the base of first- and second-season-old dead branches. A second but less common infection site is associated with galls caused by the insectSaperda concolor.
