THE DIFFERENCE between classical engineering and financial engineering is that if you get your calculations wrong when building a bridge, it might fall down, but when you get your financial engineering wrong you just get a fat bill for taxes. So tax engineers, freed from the laws of physics, have a habit of playing fast and loose with the rules.
