When we reviewen Nero 8 Ultra Edition in November 2007, we concluded that you probably didn't need it if you already had Nero 7 or another media-creation package you were satisfied with. Though this year's version of the software, Nero 9 ($99.99), boasts some notable improvements over both its predecessor and its main competitor, Roxio Creator 2009, our opinion hasn't changed. Nero suffers from the same basic weakness that cripples Roxio: It shows its age. The $99.99 package is a melange of tools that help you do almost anything with your photos, music, and video, from creating to editing to burning. Because many of these capabilities are now integrated into most flavors of Windows Vista, however, the software has been forced to go broad merely to stay afloat.
