Hormone replacement therapy has many benefits: it can relieve some postmenopausal conditions: vasomotor instability (hot flushes), genitourinary dysfunction (dyspareunia, and urgency of micturition and stress incontinence), and psychiatric abnormalities (lethargy, irritability, and depression), prevent some recurrent infections of the genitourinary tract, and reduce the risk of developing coronary artery disease and osteoporosis.Against these benefits must be balanced the slightly increased risk of endometrial cancer (not apparent with combined oestrogen/progestogen treatment) and of breast cancer.
