Pioneering uses

Robert Blackburn's monoplanes carved some memorable careers, their successes punctuated with incidents and accidents, reflecting the pioneering times in which they flew. The Light Type monoplane continued serving with Filey's school and by spring 1911 Bentfield Hucks was flying the Mercury I there. On 17 May Hucks and the Mercury I travelled from Primrose Valley to Scarborough and back (around 18 miles) in 19 minutes, climbing to 1,200ft, reported as the highest altitude yet achieved in the north of England.
