Eleven new complexes of tin(II) and tin(IV) halides with p-nitrosodimethylaniline and p-nitrosodiethylaniline have been synthesized and characterized by their magnetic and spectral properties. Coordination numbers of one, two and four with respect to the ligands have been observed for these compounds. The electronic spectra of the complexes consist of intraligand transitions in methanol, nitromethane and as nujol mulls. The infrared spectra indicate that the ligands coordinate through the nitroso group, while the magnetic data show that the molecules are unsymmetrical. Tetrahedral coordination about the tin atom has been proposed for the tin(II) complexes while the tin(IV) complexes are presumed to be octahedral.
