The trek was long at this year's U.S. Open, held at the Bethpage State Park Black Course on Long Island. Seven miles long through deep rough. When I arrived, I made a beeline for the Nikon Pro Services trailer. Takayuki Abe, the world's number one Nikon tech, checks and cleans my gear as needed. While he worked his magic on my F5s, I walked the course and got a feel for where to go, where some cool angles might be, and where I'd be able to work two or more holes at the same time. Steady rain became an unwel- come guest for much of the tournament, so rain gear was essential―single-weight XCR Goretex pants and jackets work best―along with a sturdy pair of light hikers, some good socks, and a great assistant similarly outfitted. To keep the cameras dry, Aquatech raincovers (www.aquat-ech.com.au) work the best. Tomas Hinton, my assistant, and I split the carrying of a 600 f/4 AFs, 400 f/2.8 AFs, 80-200 f/2.8 AFs, 28-70 f/2.8 AFs, and a 17-35 f/2.8 AFs.
