Acanthosis nigricans (AN) is a symmetric eruption manifested as velvety hyperpigmentation and papillomatosis, often associated with underlying systemic disorders, such as diabetes mellitus, polycystic ovary syndrome, excess of corticosteroids, and malignancy. In childhood, the majority of cases are idiopathic and associated with obesity, with a positive correlation between the development of AN and the severity of obesity. Obese patients with AN have higher plasma insulin levels than those without AN, indicating that AN may be a cutaneous marker of hyperinsulinemia in both obese and non-obese individuals.
