We read with interest the article by Schlosser et al. regarding the impact of acute sleep deprivation on technical and cognitive skills 1. The objective appraisal of the impact of sleep deprivation on technical and cognitive skills will contribute toward a more informed discussion of a complex subject. In a recent systematic review of the impact of fatigue resulting from sleep deprivation, the authors highlighted the equivocal nature of the current evidence base 2. Prior to the assessment of the impact of a set of conditions, the variables must be clearly defined and standardized at the pre-interventional stage. The authors do not present data regarding the proficiency of the participants prior to the commencement of the study 1.
