South Korea’s state-controlled utilities plan a spending binge of 7.5 trillion won ($6.72bn) to cut emissions of fine dust from their coal-fired power plants by 50pc, going beyond government environmental mandates as newly elected President Moon Jae-in starts to implement anti-coal policies. The investment will reduce fine dust emissions at the companies’ coal plants to 87,000t in 2022 from 174,000t in 2015, utility Komipo said. The initiative is being carried out by state-controlled utility Kepco and five of its generation units Komipo, Koen, EWP, Kospo and Kowepo.
