This report refers to our newly developed computer assisted surgical navigation system, named "CANS Navigator III," which is widely used for neurosurgical and otolaryngological applications. This new system is designed very compact, made possible by adopting a notebook personal computer, instead of a mainframe, for system control and data handling in image-guided navigation in surgical fields. It is about one-third in size and weight, compared with the CANS Navigator NT system, the preceding system from Shimadzu. The rack of the main body of the new system can be easily separated into three parts, so that the system can be readily carried from one place to another by a doctor, without help of other people, to be used for different applications. This design concepts have met the recent needs of the market of surgical navigators...easy operation, compact size, and economical price, as well as surgical track display capability. The Shimadzu CANS Navigator HI has been already accepted by many surgeons.
