On the morning of May 3 2003, Chinese Academy of Military Medical Sciences and CAS donated 300 thousand test kits for SARS virus, which is based on ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbant Assay) technique, to the National Headquarters for Prevention and Control of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). These reagents will be sent to the front-line against SARS in no time and will provide a powerful tool to diagnose SARS in an accurate, quick and convenient way. The scientific principle of detecting virus infection is that once the human body is infected by virus, the patient will develop a specific antibody against the external virus. When the specially prepared virus protein reacts with blood serum taken from the patients, the specific protein of the virus in the detecting reagent will combined with antibodies, and then the enzyme-linked reaction will make the color of reagent change and that may be detected by the instrument to make the identification of people infected by the virus and therefore get accurate diagnosis.
