The formation of phosgene caused by short-wave radiation from welding arcs in air contaminated with perchloroethylene has been studied experimentally, and compared with theoretical calculations. There is some agreement between the methods and it is concluded that welding in air contaminated with perchloroethylene is more hazardous than welding in air containing trichloroethylene or methylchloroform and should be avoided.
