Most hydro project operators routinely face the task of removing large woody debris that accumulates in reservoirs. Such debris can damage dams, spillways, and powerhouses and threaten the safety of boaters and other recreational-ists. Once the debris is removed, disposing of it poses another dilemma. Tacoma Power, a public utility in Tacoma, Wash., for years struggled with managing this debris in the reservoirs of its seven hydroelectric projects. However, the utility recently found a way to put the debris to work to improve fish habitat at one of its dams.
