On the last day of May, 2005, the Czech Prime Minister and his deputy met the Japanese president of Toyota Motor Corporation to exchange gifts. The occasion was the inauguration of a new car factory in Kolin, 60km east of Prague, the Czech capital. The dignitaries were lucky not to have been run over. The factory, a 50:50 joint venture between Toyota and PSA Peugeot Citroen, had already been in production for three months. The peril to VIPs, however, was as nothing compared with the perceived danger the plant already posed to its long established auto industry competitors, particularly those owned and run by the dinosaurs of Detroit.
