Clonal individuals of 10 plants ofRumex crispusL. from each of six populations were planted in experimental gardens in College Station, TX; St. Louis, MO; and London, Ont., in 1975. Two of the populations were from Ontario and one each was from Indiana, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Texas. In College Station most plants from the four northern populations survived for a year, but none flowered. In contrast, 80 of all the plants from Louisiana and Texas flowered in 1976. At the two other gardens all plants of five populations flowered in 1976, while the plants from the most southern populations (Louisiana) suffered 30 mortality before the 1976 flowering period. We conclude that there are differences between populations and within some populations in requirements for flowering that relate to vernalization and (or) photoperiod.
