To reach Barnaby Barford's studio I travelled on the top of a 34 bus from Walthamstow Central, at the northeast end of London's Victoria Line. From the top deck I was able to observe the shop fronts along the route, which gave me an instant profile of the area. There was a shop offering a Halal lunch for a pound, a host of other takeaways and more hairdressers and nail bars than average. Each of these was advertised by signs that were trying to outvoice one another. I had begun my day in London in Bond Street.
