Social and economic changes in November 1989 brought to the Czech Republic remarkable consequences for the water quality of rivers and reservoirs: intensity of agriculture decreased, including reduction of arable land area, and about a 50 decrease in the use of fertilizers. The most dangerous sources of industrial pollution were eliminated, and treatment of municipal wastewater was considerably improved due to massive investments. These facts led to suppression of organic pollution and to reduction of nitrogen and phosphorus (N, P) nutrient concentrations in rivers. Moreover, demands of waterworks for raw water decreased markedly, owing to more reasonable use of drinking water. This analysis shows how the above-listed changes influenced the trophic conditions of six reservoirs in the Czech Republic.
