The introduction of the nuclear reactor into submarines promised unlimited underwater endurance. This could only be achieved if the human problems of continuous exposure to the sealed atmosphere of the totally closed environment could be overcome. Foremost amongst the problems was the establishment of permissible levels for continuous exposure to toxic substances in the atmosphere. The problems are discussed, as are the methods currently used in the Royal Navy to deal with them. Evidence so far available indicates that adequate control of the closed environment has been achieved.
