The effects of pH and bicarbonate on cation accumulation by barley roots have been separated. Bicarbonate stimulates but increasing pH inhibits, Na, K, Ca, and Fe absorption. Net enhancement is observed in the absorption of Na and K but depression in that of Fe at high pH in the presence of bicarbonate. The net enhancement is due to the HCO3minus;present in the bathing solution and the depression is due to pH.
