We investigated a feasibility of an ultra high-speed transmission using a 40Gbit/s-based optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) technique employing electro-absorption (EA) modulators. By use of a newly developed 80Gbit/s-OTDM module, 160Gbit/s polarization multiplexed transmission over 180km of standard fibers was demonstrated, and it was maintaining Q values of more than 7 (17dB). In addition, an improvement of transmission distance was discussed from optical signal noise ratio (OSNR) at transmitters.
