A sigmoidal curve was obtained for the relationship between the stimulation of light-induced proton uptake and the concentration of salts in a suspending medium for thylakoid membranes. Substitution of sucrose for the salts also resulted in a sigmoidal curve. It changed into a hyperbolic curve with salts when the medium already contained sucrose. The results are discussed in relation to the structural arrangement of the thylakoid membranes by the osmotic effect of the solutes.
