A series of bivalent metal complexes of the type ML2nBM = CoII, NiII, CuII; L = 1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-(1-naphthalenyl)-2-propen-1-one (HPNP) or 1-(1-hydroxy-2-naphthalenyl)-3-(1-naphthalenyl)-2-propen-1-one (HNNP); n = O, 2; B = H2O or Py have been prepared and characterized with the aid of analytical data, magnetic moments and electronic and infrared spectra. For M = CuII, n = O and the complexes are monomeric and have trans square-planar geometry. For M = CoIIor NiII, n = 2 and the complexes have high-spin trans octahedral configurations. For M = CoIIor NiIIwith n = 0 the complexes are high-spin octahedral polymers. The weak ligand field nature of these ligands in contrast to 2#x2032;-hydroxychalcones are attributed to steric inhibition of extensive conjugation.
