Intel's core 2 extreme QX9770 will be the new top-end entry in the company's consumer CPU line. The QX9770 offers a noticeable, though not dramatic, speedup over the previous top-of-the-line QX9650—though Intel says it will be priced higher than that $1,000 CPU. (Exact pricing was not available at press time.) The QX9770 includes the same improvements introduced with the QX9650: It's built on the smaller, 45-nanometer manufacturing process; it boasts a whopping 12MB of Level 2 cache memory; and it supports the new SSE4 instructions, which can dramatically speed up some video-encoding and graphics operations.
