Aortic plasma histamine levels were determined in dogs after the pulmonary artery injection of a weak in vitro mast cell histamine liberator, sodium diatrizoate, and after a relatively potent histamine liberator, meglumine iodipamide. Significant and sustained histamine release occurred during the 30 minutes of study following the meglumine iodipamide injections. Aortic hypotension, tachycardia, and a low voltage on the electrocardiogram occurred coincident with the histamine release. Neither the histamine release nor the hemodynamic effects were observed following equiosmolal sodium chloride injections. Neither histamine release nor hemodynamic effects were detected following the sodium diatrizoate injections.
