Mineral naming, once haphazard and largely uncontrolled, has been stabilized and formalized through the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) and its Commission on New Minerals Nomenclature Classification (CNMNC). While one cannot always agree on some of the renaming and mass discrediting that has marred an otherwise critically important function, the CNMNC has essentially brought order and consensus to mineralogical nomenclature.
