In this article, we present a framework for the quality of service (QoS) guarantees in next generation IP networks which use differentiated services (DiffServ), multi-protocol label switching (MPLS), and constraint-based routing (CBR). We then describe the traffic engineering required for this framework, which consists of traffic measurement/analysis, network design, traffic control, and congestion control. In particular, we focus on several key components of traffic engineering, which cover traffic measurement, LSP bandwidth dimensioning, LSP setup process, admission and congestion control, and show their technical problems to be solved.
