The State-Level Committee formed for carrying out the population estimation of wild animals in Maharashtra has estimated that the tiger population in the State during 2001 was around 238, including 155 tigers in the protected area (this includes the Multiple-use Area (MUA) of Melghat Tiger Reserve (MTR)) and about 83 tigers in the forest area outside protected areas (PAs) such as sanctuaries and national parks.
