Urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine. It is a common ailment that affects up to 50 of women within their lifetime, and has a detrimental effect on quality of life. There are many effective treatments, including conservative and medical management, available in the community before referral to secondary care. It is essential that GPs have a good understanding of the assessment, primary management and indications for onward referral of this common complaint that has a significant impact on quality of life.
