A biomarker pattern has been identified that could be used to classify patients with Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment.A recent study published in Archives of Neurology analyzed data from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of elderly patients. Geert De Meyer and colleagues (Ghent University, Belgium) looked at data from 114 older adults classified as cognitively normal, 200 adults who had mild cognitive impairment and 102 patients with Alzheimer's disease. The researchers looked specifically at three biomarkers found in the CSF A beta l-42, total CSF Tau protein and P-Taul81P. They first analyzed the data from all of the patients without knowing the cognitive status. By doing so they identified different profiles, one presumed to match to Alzheimer's patients and the other presumed to be 'healthy'.
