A psychological examination of a number of unselected hypertonic patients – 25 male and 25 female – was made. In half of them there were familial heart and circulatory diseases. In the female patients, adiposity was significantly more frequent than in a female control group. There were no significant pecularities as to clinical symptoms, remembered neurotic symptoms of childhood, family interaction, and releasing situations. The duration of the disease in the female neurotic hypertonics was three times as long as in the non-neurotic ones.
