The old Masterton station had been built in 1904, designed by George Troup and replacing an earlier building, so by 1960 it was showing its age. At the north end was the Porters' Room, and next to it was the Parcels Office, then the General Office and Ticket Office combined. Next there was the Waiting Room, and off the Waiting Room were the Chief Stationmasterand Stationmaster's Offices. The old bookstall became the Numbertaker's Office, then the Ladies Rest Room. Coming south you then had the parcels dock with barrow bay and the four signal levers - up and down, home and distant. What had once been the Stationmaster's Office was the Automatic Telephone Exchange, and at the south end was the Refreshment Room.
