Recent restructuring of rail services for the NSW wheat industry involved termination of branch line traffic and concentration on main line movements. The effects of these decisions are examined, with emphasis on economic and spatial impacts of rail branch line closure on the farming and business community of Manilla in northern NSW. The conceptual framework reflects methods and findings from overseas studies. In contrast to reports from overseas, minimal economic and spatial changes were found in the study area. However, even small negative impacts can be significant when combined with impacts of other forms of rationalisation and reorganisation.
