As a trainee you are likely to be bombarded with consultation models, and rightly so. However, how often do you stumble over the numerous checklists and tasks you are encouraged to consider? How much concentration and energy is required to even remember the questions! Too often the result is a robotic consultation that seems even more doctor centred than ever. The clinical skills assessment (CSA) is looming and you are struggling to get your consultations down to anything like 10 minutes. The right questions might be being asked, but little attention is paid to what the patient is actually saying.
