Toona ciliata M. J. Roemer syn. Cedrela toona Roxb. (Bengali : Toon, Fam. Meliaceae) is a tall tree widely distributed in many districts of Bangladesh. The plant has a folkloric reputation to exhibit cardiotonic, antiulcer, analgesic and antirheumatic properties. Chemical investigations of T. ciliata have led to the isolation of a number of terpenoids, limonoids, pregnanes, campesterol and a coumarin. The antifungal activity of the crude extract and alimonoid, cedrelone, antifeedant activity of the photooxidation products of cedrelone as well as some other limonoids have been reported earlier. We have investigated the petrol extract of T. ciliata stem bark which afforded two known steroids, stigmasterol and stigmast-4-en-3-one and a known C-methyl coumarin, siderin (1) along with a mixture of two C-methyl coumarins, 4,7, 8-trimethoxy-5-methyl coumarin (2) and 4, 8-dimethoxy-7-hydroxy-5-methyl coumarin (3) by column chromato-graphy followed by PTLC or by careful solvent treatments. All of these compounds, except siderin, are the first report from the genus, Toona.
