A software-based MPEG-4 video encoder on an application processor for cellular phones has been developed. The application processor operates at 133 MHz, and employs 1.0MMAC/MHz DSP coupled with CPU and 128 kByte high speed on-chip memory. By using these features, 4.2 times faster MPEG-4 video encoding could be achieved. And this enables realtime Simple@L1 MPEG-4 video encoding using QCIF at 15fps.
