Disodium ethylenediaminetetraaeetate selectively extracts the Prussian blue-reactive iron from senile cerebral sideroealcifieation but leaves intact the iron in hemosiderin. Calcium demonstrable by the von Kossa method is entirely extracted. The residual substrate has the same basophilia and stainability by the periodic acid-Schiff method as the original material. In view of the known chelating properties of the extraetant, and the resistance of the iron to acid extraction, it is concluded that the selective removal of one type of iron is a process of chelation. As the chelatable ferruginous substance is colorless, the nameachromosiderinis proposed for it.
