Schizosaccharomyces pombehas two genes each encoding an isozyme of NADH-dependent glvcerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenases(gpd1+andgpd2+). To gain an insight into the function of these genes, here we constructed agpd2deletion mutant, in addition to the previously constructedgpd1deletion mutant. We showed that thegpd1+andgpd2+gene-products are both funcional in terms of thede novoglycerol synthesis. Furthermore, thegpd1+-mediated glycerol production is primarily responsible for the osmoregulation, but thegpd2+gene is not. Interestingly, however, thegpd2deletion mutant had histidine- or lysine-auxotrophy for growth on a minimal medium.
