Possibilities and limitations of partial nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma

Partial nephrectomy provides effective therapy for patients with localized renal cell carcinoma in whom preservation of renal function is important. Long-term cancer-free patient survival is comparable to that obtained after radical nephrectomy. The role of partial nephrectomy in patients with a normal opposite kidney is not yet established. Continued careful evaluation of patient outcome data is needed to define acceptable limits for this approach.
