INTERNAL ABDOMINAL HERNIAS are not common, but should be considered during evaluation of abdominal symptoms suggestive of intestinal obstruction. Of special note in the case presented here is the difficulty of diagnosis complicated by pregnancy, which also limits diagnostic investigation. Internal hernias, which are protrusions of a viscus through a mesenteric or peritoneal defect, most often are paraduodenal. The following case involves herniation of small bowel through a defect in the sigmoid mesocolon.
