Fault-dynamic modeling has been applied for analysis of a potentially hazardous situation in a benzene chlorinator. Traditional fault-tree analysis is used to determine the combinations of component failures that can lead to a particular process upset condition. Realistic dynamic-modeling is then used to calculate the time available for corrective action once the upset has started. The result of the analysis shows the time required for reaction runaway (temperature excursion toward 500 K) is about 1.9 hours. References: 13
