Statistics has been applied in various ways to music. For example, various stochastic techniques have been used in composition (sound example 1). Stochastic techniques have also been used in forecasting unfinished works. A physicist named Voss studied the spectral properties of different musical signals and speculated on the possibility of them being so-called 1/f noise. In a paper with my thesis adviser, David Brillinger, we studied this in more detail (sound examples 2, 3, 4).
