ABSTRACTThe use of infrared light (IRL) has been proposed as a replacement of the Nd:YAG laser in several contact surgeries, for example, hemorrhoids. Although the photo coagulant effect can indeed be obtained with the IRL, we found that the thermal degradation (loss of one-third of the temperature gain) is profoundly altered when using IRL, and this could have important negative side effects in the normal surrounding tissues.
