We are happy to introduce this special section on Foundations of Computer Science. Since the first special section on this title has been published in 2004, this series of special sections has played a significant role to promote studies in this area. The special sections also give good opportunities to those who are facing new application problems for finding consistent solutions. It will be our great pleasure if this seventh special section on the title too help readers and encourage researchers in the field. This special section includes one invited paper, nine submitted papers and one letter, all qualified careful review over nineteen submissions. The invited paper by Professor Tatsuya Akutsu at Kyoto University reviews recent key results on the tree edit distance problem. Besides the remarkable results, it is so impressive to see that universal discussions in foundations of computer science could help developing very recent problems which are now occurring in bioinformatics.
